This study helps to illustrate the current sub-optimal situation of marine protection in the Spanish Mediterranean Sea and the need to increase effective protection efforts to achieve conservation objectives. It assesses the level of protection of 27 Spanish MPAs and identifies the fishing gears allowed within the partially protected areas. One of the conclusions indicates that 63% is incompatible with nature conservation and 7% of these MPAs are fully or highly protected.
